Destination Madison

What does it take to build a city where LGBTQ+ inclusion isn’t just promised, but practiced? At Destination Madison, we know that LGBTQ+ inclusion requires more than good intentions. It demands honest dialogue, strategic action, and a willingness to evolve. For organizations looking to move from allyship to action, we’re sharing the blueprint we’re using to foster true belonging for our visitors and residents.

In 2023 and again in 2024, we partnered with Billy Kolber and Kenny Porpora of HospitableMe to host “Everyone Welcome,” a two-part training designed to equip our hospitality partners with the knowledge and tools to warmly welcome LGBTQ+ travelers. Billy and Kenny shared insights on evolving LGBTQ+ language and culture, challenges faced by LGBTQ+ travelers, recognizing and addressing unconscious bias, and marketing strategies to authentically reach the growing LGBTQ+ market.

We believe the hospitality experience begins the moment a guest steps off the plane. When partners are greeted with warmth by rideshare drivers. When preferences are honored without assumptions when checking into a hotel. And when restaurant staff demonstrate an understanding of identity that goes beyond tolerance to genuine respect. Inclusive hospitality means recognizing that every interaction, no matter how small, is an opportunity to affirm belonging.

In addition to training our hospitality network, Billy and Kenny have worked closely with Destination Madison’s internal teams to help us identify gaps and grow stronger. In January 2025, we launched our first LGBTQ+ Advisory Committee—a vibrant group of 19 residents, business owners and changemakers who meet quarterly to shape the city’s future as a travel destination.

As committee member Lee Kampa shared, “This committee's work ensures that residents and visitors alike are seen and welcomed as their true, authentic selves.”

In June 2025, we launched Madison Queer Voices, a storytelling initiative that centers the lived experiences of LGBTQ+ locals and visitors. Because who better to tell a destination’s story than those who live it?

Looking ahead to 2026, our next Strategic Plan will deepen our commitment to sustainability—economic, environmental and social. We’re building a toolkit to help our staff, volunteers and partners embody inclusive values in every interaction. And we’re investing in partnerships with IGLTA, the LGBT Meeting Professionals Association (LGBT MPA) and Tourism Cares to keep learning, listening and leading.

Our message is clear: To LGBTQ+ travelers everywhere, Madison is ready for you, and you belong here.
