Explore Cambodia’s ancient and modern history on The Evolved Traveler’s 7-night journey, “Cambodia: Behind the Veil.” Opportunities to engage with local communities eager to share their hospitality with you are an integral part of getting to know and to better understand an area that has witnessed so much.
Explore the many UNESCO World Heritage Sites in this remarkable country, including the temples at the Angkor Archaeological Park and the impressive walled city of Angkor Thom, where a paddleboat ride takes you around the complex’s extensive moat. Enjoy lunch at Sala Bai, a hospitality training school for young Cambodians from economically challenged areas. An excursion into the countryside takes you to Beng Mealea and Banteay Srei before visiting the Landmine Museum, which serves as both an educational facility and rescue center for those who have suffered injuries from landmines. The rich cultural traditions of the Khmer come to life at an evening performance of music and dance, as well as during a morning visit to local markets. Then, visit the Trailblazer Foundation to learn about their efforts to provide a consistent source of clean water in rural Cambodian villages.
Continue on to Phnom Penh, where a cyclo ride takes you by Tonle Sap River, the French Quarter, and Wat Phnom. Visit the Royal Palace, the Silver Pagoda, and National Museum followed by a tour of the city’s other architectural monuments by a local “remok” (tuk-tuk). An excursion outside the city takes you to the somber Killing Fields and the Tuol Seng Museum to learn about the Cambodian genocide.
