NYC & Company laying groundwork for Year of Pride

June is usually synonymous with LGBTQ pride in New York, but with so many milestones and events, most notably the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising and World Pride's first U.S.-based celebration, NYC & Company has dubbed 2019 the "Year of Pride." "There are literally going to be hundreds of exhibitions, programs, speaker series throughout the year that are really going to give people the opportunity to come and engage in that history, and enjoy this theme not just in the month of June, in the [traditional] pride month, but in fact throughout the year," said Fred Dixon, NYC & Company's president and CEO.

Parliament passes bill changing same-sex marriage law

The National Assembly on Thursday passed a bill which will make it impermissible for marriage officers working for the State to refuse to marry same-sex couples, but objections were raised to the fact that Home Affairs has been granted a 24-month transitional period for training. The Civil Union Amendment Bill, which seeks to repeal section 6 of the act allowing marriage officers to opt out of marrying same-sex couples on the basis of "conscience, religion and belief," was passed with the support of most parties.

Croatian activists to challenge law barring gay couples from fostering children

Croatian gay rights groups on Tuesday slammed a new law that blocks same sex couples from becoming foster parents and vowed to fight it in the country's top court. The new law was adopted by parliament last Friday after a heated debate in the staunchly Catholic country over whether same-sex couples should be eligible to take in children. "As soon as this discriminatory law enters into force we will file a complaint with the constitutional court," Daniel Martinovic of Rainbow Families association, an association of same-sex parents, told AFP. It "once again sends a message to (LGBT) 'life partners' that they are second-class citizens, and also doesn't take childrens' best interests into account," he said.

"I'm fearing for my life — they don't want us to stay here," said Omar, 28. "The gay community is very scared because police are breaking into homes of suspected homosexuals and arresting them.
